Theatre Trier
Refurbishment and expansion,
Trier
The Theater Trier is a three-genre repertory theater offering music theater, dance, drama, and musicals. The program also includes numerous concerts by the Philharmonic Orchestra of Trier. The building, constructed in the 1960s by Gerhard Graubner, is in urgent need of renovation from both a structural and technical perspective, and there are significant space constraints.

The negotiation process for the renovation and expansion of Theater Trier was combined with a parallel realization competition for the new building. The consortium ARGE MOW & Fabre Speller was awarded the contract for the planning and execution of the renovation as well as the implementation of the new construction, while Studio PFP won first place in the realization competition for the new building design. The existing building will be preserved and renovated in its original and characteristic form. To reorient the theater toward the city, the existing structure will be complemented by two new wings. Planned features include an entrance hall with gastronomy, a multifunctional third performance space, and an orchestra rehearsal hall.

The expansions offer opportunities for a new urban orientation between Augustinerhof and Viehmarkt. The new entrance opens with an inviting gesture toward Gerty-Spies-Straße and creates a theater plaza. The old entrance building will be dismantled.
The renovation and expansion ensure a future-ready and flexible building equipped with state-of-the-art technology for the long-term, multifunctional use of the theater.

In collaboration with our partners Fabre Speller Architectes, MOW is responsible for the general planning and renovation, while Studio PFP Hamburg has been commissioned to design the new building.
