Battonnhöfe

General refurbishment,

Frankfurt am Main

Sustainable architecture does not only mean constructing buildings, but also preserving existing buildings. This shapes the appearance of our cities, is highly valued in the long term and, last but not least, contributes to improving the quality of urban life.
As an inner-city residential project with exemplary character, the 11 houses of the Battonnhöfe are being completely renovated in four construction phases, modernized and brought up to a sustainable standard. The special feature of this project is the preservation of the tenant structure during and after the refurbishment, as well as the retention of affordable living space. All existing residents will be temporarily relocated to an interim apartment in the ensemble and will return to their original, now completely renovated apartment as soon as the renovation of the respective construction phase is complete. The new living space created in this way remains in the moderate rent segment, without being socially subsidized housing.
Originally built at the end of the 19th century as a Wilhelminian-style ensemble, the historic Battonnhöfe were largely destroyed in the Second World War and four new apartment blocks were built in 1954-56 to replace the original buildings.

To date, only minor alterations have been made to the basic structure; only the red sandstone façade elements of buildings 23 and 25 are listed buildings. These will be restored respectfully and integrated into the façade concept.

In some design-defining elements, such as the balcony railings, the style of the 1950s will be selectively adapted and interpreted in a contemporary way.
The differentiated street-side color concept makes the individual houses recognizable, the accentuation of the entrance areas strengthens the identity of the buildings and provides orientation for the residents.

The newly designed inner courtyard becomes the green heart of the ensemble and restores the original meaning of the courtyards. This is where social interaction throughout all generations takes place. Great importance is attached to preserving the existing stock of trees and shrubs, as this contributes to a sustainably green center and improves the microclimate in the neighborhood.

While the upper floors are reserved exclusively for residential use, some units on the ground floors are used for commercial purposes.
